SMAC Cross Country History

SMAC Cross Country was founded in 2002 by Tim Butler. Since that time, many athletes, coaches, and parents have participated in the program and helped make SMAC the great program that it has become! SMAC Cross Country has always been a program compromised of very dedicated, hardworking girls and boys who are willing to give their best effort and work together to help each other, and themselves reach their fullest potential! These athletes also show the great characteristics of Strength, Motivation, and Courage, which are very important qualities to be successful in the sport of running, and to develop as well rounded people.

2002 Team: Patricia Babcock, Annie Butler, Tierney Coleman, Ali Crable, Claire Dolan, Anna Finke, Kelly Maglocci, Holly Schnicke, Jess White

Coaches: Mr. Butler, Mr. Prenger

SMAC Cross Country’s very first team, listed above, played a very large, very positive influence on all of the traditions and characteristics that the SMAC program has developed to this day. The SMACathons, the pasta parties, the fun games at practices, countless traditions, all of those and much, much more originated from this team and their coaches. The girls were very dedicated and willing to always give their best effort when it was time to work hard, and no doubt they knew how to have fun as well! One example being the “sprint relays” (created by coaches Mr. Butler and Mr. Prenger) in which the girls chased water balloons to put a fun, unique twist on their workouts! Their hard work all season long ended up resulting in a well deserved first place finish at the Greater Cincinnati All-City Middle School Championships, even in their first year, they proved themselves champions!

2003 Team: Patricia Babcock, Annie Butler, Tierney Coleman, Anna Finke, Kelly Maglocci, Sarah Marshall, Mary Price, Holly Schnicke, Jess White

Coaches: Mr. Butler, Mr. Prenger

Many of the members of the 2002 team, as well as both coaches, were back again for another very fun, successful year on SMAC cross country! Although the team was small, similar to the girls’ 2002 team one year prior, they worked together and performed so well and had another outstanding season! At the New Richmond Invitational, the girls placed second out of many, and left with their heads held high. A little while later, after more hard work, the girls were back again for another great performance at the St. Xavier Invitational, where they proudly achieved a wonderful third place finish! But it’s not over there, a few weeks later the girls were back to shine once again, at the Greater Cincinnati All-City Middle School Championships, only to defend their title as the Girls Small School Division Champions, a perfect way to finish off an incredible season!

2004 Team: Patricia Babcock, Kelsey Gault, Alli Kelsey, Danielle King, Jamie Naber, Lauren Paasch, Jenna Pilipovich, Mary Price,  Holly Schnicke, Natalie Torbeck, Kayla Walters, Allison Willhide, Andrea Wolf

Despite the struggles to recruit enough team members to compete this year, the girls displayed hard work, dedication, and team unity while also having a great time doing so! The girls worked extremely hard and worked together all season long, which definitely showed in their performances at the cross country meets, including a very close third place finish in the Small School girls division of the Greater Cincinnati All-City Middle School Championship!

The 2005 SMAC Cross Country season was another to be very proud of. The girls worked extremely hard all season long, while having loads of fun doing it! The season consisted of many challenging workouts, but also so many fun games…hide and seek, obstacle courses, scavenger hunts, just to name a few. At the Princeton Invitational, the girls left with an awesome second place finish and were back again to do the same at the Wyoming Invitational! The girls then came back the following week to earn a first place at the Greater Cincinnati All-City Middle School Championship in the Small School Girls Division. This was the third time in four years that SMAC achieved this very honorable title!

2006 Girls Team: Colleen Butler, Dani Dailey, Megan Downey, Abbey Hnat, Jenni Henderson, Elena Lohr, Cassie Miller, Lauren Paasch, Amber Peters, Megan Schnicke, Katelyn Sussli, Anna Rutkousky, Haley Thocker, Allison Weaver

Coach: Mr. Prenger

The 2006 girls team was another one to remember! In the beginning, it was difficult to recruit the number of girls needed to compete, but keeping to SMAC tradition, they managed to pull it off once again, just like years ago in 2004 and enjoy another great season! The girls worked hard and always gave their best effort, they were always willing to work together and help each other become the best they could be. This incredible teamwork and dedication was a big influence on the improvement and performances all season long, especially the City Championship meet, where every member of the team stepped it up and earned themselves another first place finish in the Small School Girls Division at the Greater Cincinnati All-City Middle School Championships!

2006 Boys Team: Andrew Branch, Jack Butler, Dan Corona, Austin Fry, Jake Haigis, Ryan Hankins, Lucas Kmetz, Alex Kuvin, Daniel Marchionda, Bobby Schantz, Christopher Schulteis, Jeroen Vereijssen

Coaches: Mr. McDonald, Mr. Kuvin, Mr. Kmetz

The SMAC Cross Country program officially had its first boys team in 2006, the team, coached by Mr. McDonald, Mr. Kuvin, and Mr. Kmetz had a very successful first year! The boys were always working hard and finished with a very well-earned 3rd place in the Greater Cincinnati All-City Middle School Championship for the Small School Boys Division!

2007 Girls Team: Dani Dailey, Randi Dailey, Megan Downey, Hayley Hilberg, Katherine Holly, Alaina Kappner, Katrina Maricocchi, Rita Maricocchi, Maggie Moeller, Courtney Naber, Caitlyn Rowane, Hannal Sagel, Rebecca Schulte, Sarah Stark, Danielle Stiene, Katelyn Sussli, Claire Williams

Coaches: Mr. Prenger, Mr. Robinson

The girls team had many newcomers this year, including only three veterans from past years! But despite the fact that it was most of the girls’ first time running cross country, each one improved so much and always gave their best effort. The team ended up having another very successful and exciting season, sometimes the practices were very tough and challenging, others were meant for fun, including the Boys vs. Girls SMACathons and scavenger hunts. But no matter what, you could count on this team to display some pretty incredible team unity and determination. All of the hard work resulted in great finishes in meets and also a first place finish at the Greater Cincinnati All-City Middle School Cross Country Championships!

2007 Boys Team: Clayton Cardinal, Brian Foos, Colin Foos, Austin Fry, Jake Haigis, Ryan Hankins, Louis Kappner, Lucas Kmetz, Alex Kuvin, Connor Murray, Bobby Schantz, Christopher Schulteis, Sayre Stejbach, John Wallach

Although only their second year in existence, the SMAC Boys cross country team had another very successful season! All of the boys worked hard and worked together all season long and it certainly showed in their performances out on the cross country course. The boys were all very proud of their season and in the very last meet at the Greater Cincinnati All-City Middle School Championships they earned a first place for their first time!

2008 Cross Country Teams…

Boys Coaches: Mr. McDonald, Mr. Kuvin

Girls Coaches: SMAC would like to welcome Mr. Kappner as the head coach for the 2008 SMAC girls cross country team! Coach Kappner will be taking over as a result of Mr. Prenger’s farewell to SMAC and a new beginning as the head coach of UAXC. Mr. Prenger is a very dedicated and hardworking coach that has helped so greatly in developing the SMAC program into what it has become today…and now Mr. Kappner is going to continue developing new traditions and helping SMAC to live on as it has in years past. Congratulations Mr. Kappner!
